Warming up to whole blood-derived platelets

As winter’s chill begins to fade and spring sunshine heats up the days, this issue of Access Point BCP brings you a fresh look at the platelet supply shortage. Specifically, we explore four clinical considerations related to whole blood-derived platelets — a potential solution for balancing platelet supply and demand. Plus, get a blood collection tip related to saline usage in the "Did You Know?" section.

As always, let us know if there are specific topics you want to read about. This newsletter is designed specifically for blood center professionals like you, and we value your input.

Platelet Supply

Considering whole blood-derived platelets? Four factors to review first

In the U.S., more than 90% of platelets used for transfusion are collected by apheresis.1 However, as an aging donor population and declining apheresis donations put the country’s platelet supply at risk, whole blood-derived platelets (WBDPs) present a way to help meet demand.1,2 Before deciding that WBDPs are — or aren’t — an option for your blood center or a particular patient, take these four important clinical considerations into account.

Your Questions, Answered

Dear Access Point BCP,

Our blood center is considering purchasing a Reveos™ Automated Blood Processing System because we've heard it can process high-quality platelets from whole blood more quickly than semiautomated whole blood processing methods. Since we don’t always need WBDPs, though, is Reveos still worth exploring? — Ashley from San Diego, CA

Dear Ashley,

Even if you don’t need WBDPs all the time, Reveos may still offer useful functions for your blood center. It’s designed to be flexible and is the only device available that can automatically separate units of whole blood into not just platelets, but also plasma, red blood cells, and residual leukocytes in a single centrifugation cycle.

When your organization’s needs change, operators can program Reveos to perform different centrifugation protocols — to collect any single component or any combination of components. (Another convenient feature: With the Reveos™ SELECT Set, you can collect those components without using multiple bag types.) See the graphic below for a look at two different collection protocols you can perform with Reveos.

3C: three component; 2C: two component; WB: whole blood; RBC: red blood cell.
*Specific counterbalance bags are available for processing fewer than four WB units.
**Residual leukocytes are not a recognized product in the U.S. This product may be discarded or used for research, according to your institution's standard operating procedures.
If you have more questions about Reveos and its functions, please contact your local Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies representative.
We will feature a reader question in each issue of Access Point BCP. If you have a question about
blood collection, please email it to us along with your first name, hometown, and state or province.
Questions not featured will be answered directly via email.

You don't need saline with Trima Accel

With the current North America saline shortage,3 it's important to know that saline use is completely optional with the Trima Accel™ Automated Blood Collection System. It’s offered only for comfort purposes. To skip saline, simply turn off the “replacement fluid” option in the device configuration settings.
