Discover the possibilities of summer

Summer is a season of possibilities — of destinations waiting to be explored and adventures waiting to unfurl. In this spirit, our summer edition of Access Point BCP focuses on the possibilities presented by whole blood-derived platelets (WBDPs). We invite you to read up on data that debunks four common myths that may prevent organizations from adopting this safe and effective alternative to apheresis platelets.

Also this month, get expert advice on an important summertime concern: the impact of heat on the Trima Accel™ Automated Blood Collection System and its accessories.

As always, let us know if there are specific topics you want to read about. This newsletter is designed specifically for blood center professionals like you, and we value your input.

Platelet Supply

The facts about whole blood-derived platelets

As U.S. blood centers increasingly adopt fully automated whole blood processing, the availability of whole blood-derived platelets is expected to grow. Despite this improved access, WBDPs are often still viewed as less desirable than apheresis platelets. Much of the hesitation can be traced to four common myths. In this month’s feature, we share data that challenges those beliefs.

Your Questions, Answered

Dear Access Point BCP,

The air conditioning in our donor center went out over the weekend, causing the temperature to increase significantly. Should we be concerned about the integrity of our Trima Accel device, tubing sets, or solutions? — Joanie from Atlanta, GA

Hi Joanie,

That's a good question at this time of year, when temperatures may soar outdoors and inside. Since the Trima Accel system and related supplies can be impacted by temperature, it's a valid concern to wonder about that air conditioning outage. We’ve summarized key temperature recommendations below. (Note the differences between short-term excursions, like the one you experienced, and routine use and storage conditions.) For complete details, see your Trima Accel operator’s manual and the tubing set Instructions for Use.
We will feature a reader question in each issue of Access Point BCP. If you have one, please email it to us along with your first name, hometown, and state or province. Questions not featured will be answered directly via email.

There are updates to part numbers and product classification

During the transition from the European Union Medical Device Directive (EU MDD) to the European Union Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR), the Seal Safe™ System regulatory classification was reassessed. It has been down-classified from a Class IIb stand-alone medical device to a Class I accessory device. This is because Seal Safe is not necessary for Trima Accel to perform its intended use.

Since Seal Safe is now considered an accessory, we have given it a new part number: 809158000. Use this number when ordering. However, when your Seal Safe system needs servicing, reference the Trima Accel serial number, not the Seal Safe serial number.

For details about these changes or for assistance adjusting your equipment management system to correspond with the changes, contact your Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies representative.
