A time for transformation

In the midst of fall, we’re in a season of change. That makes now a perfect time to consider ideas for transforming your blood center in ways that can help enhance processes and patient care. In this issue of Access Point BCP, we share some ideas, starting with a software solution that can streamline the production of whole blood-derived platelets. Then we shine a spotlight on one blood center’s journey to whole blood automation — and the benefits that’s driving.

As always, you’ll also find helpful resources and upcoming events. And if there are specific topics you want to read about, let us know. This newsletter is designed specifically for blood center professionals like you, and we value your input.

Software solutions

A strategy for streamlined WBDP production

Blood collection professionals increasingly see the value of whole blood-derived platelets (WBDPs) in helping supplement the platelet supply. However, producing WBDPs can be a complex process. Integrated software tools can help streamline the workflow and maximize efficiency — allowing you to improve platelet yield while maintaining product quality.1

Did you know?

It can be easy to estimate platelet counts

When you process whole blood with Reveos, the system monitors the platelets being pooled and provides an estimated platelet yield for each interim platelet unit (IPU). We call this feature the platelet yield index (PYI). It’s displayed for easy reading on the Reveos device screen, and it’s recorded in the system’s software.

The PYI value delivers several benefits:

  • Enables informed decisions about which platelet units to combine
  • Helps optimize pooled platelet yield
  • Reduces variability in final pooled products
Ultimately, PYI combined with other software features can help you successfully create more pools from the four IPUs that Reveos can process in each cycle.

To learn more about how PYI and our software solution can help your blood center improve platelet pooling efficiency, talk with your Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies representative.

Your questions, answered

Dear Access Point BCP,

We use the Reveos system. I keep hearing about something called stations in relation to Reveos. What is it — and should our blood center be using it? – Anuj from Miami, FL

Hi Anuj,

TOMEs™ Stations is a module within the TOMEs™ (Terumo Operational Medical Equipment Software) software suite, built on the Lumia™ Software Platform* and part of the Reveos ecosystem. It's designed to help blood centers strengthen processes, improve efficiencies, and support traceability.

TOMEs Stations connects with peripheral devices, such as scales, barcode scanners, TSCD™-II Sterile Tubing Welders, and center computers. The software enables bidirectional connectivity between these compatible devices and your computer system, information management system, or business intelligence system.

With TOMEs Stations, a blood center can customize and automate standard operating procedures (SOPs), enhance traceability and data accuracy through electronic data capture, and improve data access and reporting capabilities to support GMP compliance.

To learn more about how using TOMEs Stations can help optimize your lab operations, we suggest talking with a Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies representative, who can answer your specific questions and discuss your center’s unique needs.
